The Department of Social Work at Western Connecticut State University, in keeping with the Mission of the University, seeks to educate a diversified student body, and serves as an accessible, responsive, and creative intellectual resource.

The Department of Social Work provides a quality of education that prepares informed, culturally sensitive, skilled generalist social workers, who will provide services that promote and strengthen the well-being of individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities, and that are consistent with the values and ethics of the profession. 

The program operates dynamically in the context of the broad liberal arts education and the particular social service needs of the region.


Fall 2015 semester brings a flurry of activities for social work students.

We welcome Karen Brown as our newest full-time faculty member. We also welcome Joanne Santiago (Cultural Diversity) and April Moreira (Social Welfare as an Institution) as new adjuncts. Returning adjuncts include Sean Richards (Research) Ann Cook (Human Behavior and the Social Environment), Courtney Cullinan (Social Welfare as an Institution) and Nadine Dechausay (Senor Seminar on Social Policies and Issues).

This Fall will also see the start our new mentorship program, participation the WCSU Day of  Service (Social Worker will sponsor a Voter Registration Drive), the Professional Development Day, a Graduate School Expo, Phi Alpha the national social work honor society will induct its newest members, there will be a series of APA style workshops, the Department will conduct a Poverty Simulation at New Milford Social Services, and is a co-sponsor of a conference on Child Rights and Sight at Yale University, and the seniors will display posters about their field placements.

As you can see, the Department is very involved in student activities and with the community.

The Spring semester will bring more great events and activities for students.  Before graduation in May, our students will take part in an on campus poverty simulation, attend the annual social work symposium, participate in education and outreach tables, and so many more activities.
