Educating Citizens: Preparing America's Undergraduates for Lives of Moral and Civic Responsibility
This is the text used by ADP projects across the nation. Some American colleges and universities are preparing thoughtful, committed, and socially responsible graduates. Many institutions assert these ambitions, but too few act on them. The authors demonstrate the fundamental importance of moral and civic education, describe how the historical and contemporary landscapes of higher education have shaped it, and explain the educational and developmental goals and processes involved in educating citizens. They examine the challenges colleges and universities face when they dedicate themselves to this vital task and present concrete ways to overcome those challenges. Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community
Putnam's groundbreaking work shows how social bonds are the most powerful predictor of life satisfaction. For example, he reports that getting married is the equivalent of quadrupling your income and attending a dub meeting regularly is the equivalent of doubling your income. The loss of social capital is felt in critical ways: Communities with less social capital have lower educational performance and more teen pregnancy, child suicide, low birth weight, and prenatal mortality. Better Together: Restoring the American Community

New Student Politics: The Wingspread Statement on Student Civic Engagement
The Wingspread Summit on Student Civic Engagement was held on March 15 - 17, 2001 at the Johnson Foundation in Racine, Wisconsin. The participants included a group of thirty-three juniors and seniors representing twenty-seven colleges and universities from across the country. These students were nominated by faculty and community service directors and asked to participate for two days in a candid group discussion focused on their "civic experiences" in higher education.
